The Burlington Area School District Board of Education approved the final piece of the district administrative puzzle Monday night, approving the hiring of Ruth Schenning as the new business manager.

Peter Smet, the current business manager and assistant superintendent, said the job posting went out shortly after he was appointed as the incoming superintendent last month.

Smet will replace David Moyer, who is leaving to become the new superintendent of a district in Moline, Ill.

The approval was unanimous Monday night, though board member Roger Koldeway said he would like to see the School Board more involved in the hiring process next time.

Smet said 21 people with various levels of experience applied for the position. The district narrowed the field down to four for the interview process.

“We checked the references and selected Ruth as the top candidate,” Smet said. “She had the most experience, she had the most credentials and background, and the best fit.”

Smet said Schenning had a “great” background financial management, as well as in payroll in benefits. Schenning is a certified business manager (a license that is received following a master’s degree) as well as a licensed certified public accountant.

Schenning has actually audited school districts, giving a full analysis of the district’s finances.

She has also worked at Palmyra-Eagle K-12 and Salem graded schools as the business administrator.

She will start in the position July 1.

  1. What doesn’t Roger Koldeway understand about his position on the School Board? The School Board has no business being any more involved in the decision than it was. The School District is a business, and like other businesses, management makes recommendations to a Board, and the Board either accepts the recommendation or rejects the recommendation.

  2. It appears Roger Koldeway wants to be the District’s Superintendant, and Business Manager – making all of the decisions related to the operations of the District. It also appears he might also be interested in having his own personal office in the District Offices so that nothing gets done without his involvment. It is evident Roger does not know his “place”.
