WIAA proposed changes could affect Burlington

Burlington High School Activities Director and Assistant Principal Eric Plitzuweit gave a report on a handful of items being considered by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association at Monday night’s Burlington Area School District School Board Curriculum Committee meeting.

Among the current items being discussed are:

  • The size and number of schools allowed to belong to a cooperative program. Right now, Burlington leads two co-op programs – swimming for both boys and girls, and gymnastics. Those two programs have students involved from as many as five schools each.

Plitzuweit said the WIAA is considering restricting the number of schools allowed in each co-op to as few as two, which could affect both co-ops and also potentially create a Title IX numbers problem.

“My take on this is it’s a case-by-case basis,” Plitzuweit said.

  • The organization is also considering seasonal placement of three sports, moving girls swimming and diving to the winter, girls tennis to the spring and girls soccer to the fall to align with other states and better allow for college recruitment.

Plitzuweit said with Burlington sharing coaches – and space – for all three sports, the switch could potentially be a problem.

  • While virtual schools cannot currently compete in WIAA athletics, new by-laws are being considered to allow those student access to high-school sports.
  • Concerns about sports and fall start dates are being raised, particularly with football this year. Plitzuweit said the early dates could possibly affect the number of players down the line due to the early start of seasons and the late end of the school year in Burlington.

Plitzuweit also did a short presentation on the student-athletes at Burlington High School, highlighting the high grade point averages and number of three-sport athletes.
