Phone scam targets iTunes gift cards

Area police agencies are cautioning people about a new telephone scam.

According to the City of Burlington Police Department, citizens are receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from the government. The unknown caller instructs the citizens to purchase gifts cards, specifically iTunes gift cards, and provide them with the PIN number so their debt can be paid.

The victims have stated they have had to remain on the phone with the unknown person while the transactions are taking place. iTunes gift cards need only to have that number entered into a computer for it to turn into iTunes credit for the person calling.

Most of the cards people are being asked to purchase are just under $500.

City of Burlington Lt. Brian Zmudzinski said people should never release personal information over the phone.

“Unfortunately, there are people falling prey to it,” he said.

Citizens are asked to inform their local police department if they receive calls like this.
