At least one person is confirmed dead in what Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling called an explosion at a home at 29235 Ketterhagen Road Saturday.

Schmaling said that a 911 call came in at 3:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon for a structure fire, and smoke in the home.

“Within moments, the house exploded,” Schmaling said. “When deputies arrived there, the house was leveled.”

Fire companies from across southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois responded to fire, with several different levels of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System activated. Among the companies observed on the scene were both the City and Town of Burlington, Rochester, Lyons, East Troy and Delavan.

Schmaling confirmed that one victim was found in the rubble, and there may be more. The fire investigative task force for the county is on scene now that the fire is out, “methodically going through and sifting through each piece” look for the cause of the explosion.

“There’s a lot of unknowns at this hour,” Schmaling said. “We’re going to be working through the night, and through tomorrow.”

Schmaling said the situation is “time consuming and labor intensive.”
