Festival rides out the storm

Even a potentially dangerous storm moving through the area May 28 couldn’t derail the Memorial Day Weekend – and ChocolateFest.

A thunderstorm that never got a severe thunderstorm warning cleared the grounds with little room to spare before the rain started falling.

Even the evacuation and shut-down of the grounds seemed to go exactly to plan, with the rides being shut down well before any rain fell, and the grounds cleared. There was just one injury – after the fact, by a member of the band breaking down equipment. Announcements were made prior to the storm moving in.

“During the day, we had good attendance,” Bil Scherrer, the president of the festival Operations Committee. He did not have exact attendance numbers because the turnstiles weren’t working the first day of the festival.

He estimated 40,000 attending over the four days.

“We’re up over last year for attendance,” he added. “We’re very pleased.”

Scherrer said the carnival provider and Chocolate Experience Tent vendors expressed pleasure over the success of the four-day festival. He received a testimonial from a Jim Lovejoy praising the festival.

“On behalf of myself, my son Scott, wife Jamie, and grandkids Gavin, Kyleigh and Connor, we want to thank you for a wonderful day at ChocolateFest, and for putting on a wonderful event,” Lovejoy wrote, praising the staff, event lineup, grounds – and volunteers.

“They speak well for the town of Burlington, and make me know that these are the people that I want to live near and around,” he added.
