The Burlington Area School District Buildings, Grounds and Transportation Committee last week recommended the sale of a piece of land that will eventually help the state when it removes the overpass on Highway 142.

The final approval was given by the school board Monday night.

The sale – a 10th of an acre of land that will extend McKanna Parkway to 142 – will result in a $7,300 allocation by the Department of Transportation for the project.

The largest portion of that is $3,390 for the sale of the land. The DOT is also paying $1,741 to remove two large pine trees and a little more than $2,000 to grant a temporary easement.

The work to remove the overpass and create an at-grade roundabout and trail crossing is expected to begin in 2018. The original estimate when the at-grade intersection was approved in February of 2011 was for work to start at the earliest in 2017.
