City to grant two-day exception for rummage sale signs

With the citywide rummage sale event coming up at the end of July, the City of Burlington Common Council on Tuesday discussed allowing people to put signs up in city right-of-ways.

In the past, people have been asked to remove rummage sale signs from the grassy areas that sit between streets and the sidewalks because the city sign ordinance doesn’t allow it.

However, the proposal discussed at the meeting will allow an exception just for the two days of the citywide event, July 29 and 30.

“Then go back to business as usual,” Megan Watkins, Director of Administrative Services.

While Alderman Tom Preusker expressed some concerns the exception would be rather big, City Attorney John Bjelajac said the city should be safe legal ground.

Alderman Tom Vos added, “I guess we try it, but if it becomes a tremendous mess,” the city would have to revisit the issue.

Other business

  • The council also discussed staying with FiveStar Fireworks for the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show.

The city pays for $10,000 in fireworks, which amounts to 800 for the majority of the show and 800 for the finale.

  • Among the items approved by the council was entering into a contract with Carlson Dettmann Consulting for an employee classification and compensation study, a grant agreement for WIN Properties for the former Schuette-Daniels Furniture Store, and a purchase of a new squad vehicle for the police department from Miller Motors for approximately $27,000 plus tax, title and license.
