Area toddler dies in accident

A 2-year-old Burlington boy died March 24 in what law enforcement officials are calling an accident.

Wyatt Johansen’s death was handled by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department, although Town of Waterford police would normally have handled the call.

Town of Waterford Police Chief Tom Ditscheit said his squads were administering a search warrant when the call came in on Johansen last week, and the Racine County Sheriff responded in their place.

No details have been released on Johansen’s death, and Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling wrote in a text Tuesday that reports had yet to be completed, and the investigation is incomplete.

However, he did say all indications are this was an accident.

“All evidence during this investigation is consistent with an accident and absent of foul play,” Schmaling said, adding the department’s “thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this extremely difficult time.”

The family declined to speak with news media following the incident.

  1. What could possibly be more important than a dying child? Certainly not administering a warrant.

  2. I call bull on the excuse from the town. Deputies tell me the town squad was at the town hall. A deputy got there in under 3 minutes. The town isn’t equipped or experience to handle these kids of things!

  3. how about some follow up. What search warrant…that would also be news worthy if it exists.

  4. This is a disgrace to not respond, once again Thanks to the Racine Sheriff Dept.

You want a response… Our baby boy passed away from an accident in the home of a child care provider. We are so devastated that we do not feel our boy is a story to be told in the media… He was more than a story…. He was the light of our lives… And we’re crushed. We don’t feel the paper should make money off of a tragedy, wait till something like this happens to you and your family and then tell me you feel like talking to a new paper about this ultimate loss…. Have some respect !
