The week of Jan. 12-16, 2015 has been proclaimed as Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week for the state of Wisconsin by Tony Evers, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Chris Joch, Superintendent of Schools for the Waterford Graded School District, expressed the community’s gratitude to the local adult school crossing guards – Bill Erwin, Stephanie Schwartz, Marlene Swift, Marcia Townsend, Debra Walter and Kelly Zelechowski – for their continued service and their dedication to the community.
For more than 50 years, crossing guards have served communities across Wisconsin, providing safe passage to Wisconsin’s youngest citizens as they travel to and from school each day.
Regardless of our often unpredictable Wisconsin weather, heavy traffic, or the split-shift work day, crossing guards have served the state assisting young people and their families on the importance of traveling the safest route back and forth to school as well as helping to educate students on traffic hazards and safe street crossing behavior.
Joch encourages students, parents and school staff to stop and show their appreciation for the hard work of these individuals, who provide an invaluable service in helping to assure safe passage for students walking between home and school.

Good advice, Ed, as I did just that yesterday near the intersection which is served by a crossing guard. It probably perplexed and astonished him, as he probably thought, “How does he know that it’s crossing guard week?”
