So close a shave, it just has to be the winning lie

Just how close does Sharon Eaves’ husband shave himself?

The answer is this year’s Burlington Liars Club winning lie.

Eaves, of Kenosha, won this year’s title with a lie concerning her husband’s grooming habits.

“This morning, my husband shaved so close that he shaved 10 years off his life,” wrote Eaves.

Eaves, as the winner, gets the recognition of “World Champion Liar of 2014.” She will receive a medal as well.

Eaves joked that her husband felt “10 years younger” after she won.

“This was a complete surprise,” said Eaves, who had entered the contest twice before.

Having won, she said, “It’s another thing off my bucket list.”

Eaves said she thought of a number of lies to enter, but decided to go with the one that stuck out late.

“I have a strange sense of humor,” she said. “It’s helped me. You have to laugh at a lot of things. Life’s too important to be taken seriously, right?”

Club President Dennis Tully said the group received about 120 entries this year – from 14 different states and even some from outside of the United States.

“The entries were sort of decent, but there was a little too much political stuff, like we get in a political year, which it was,” said Tully of the contest, which was started in 1930. “A lot of them were pretty good, a lot were pretty clever.”

Tully said many of the entries came from the Upper Midwest, including Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin.

“It’s a lot of fun reading through them,” “It’s what I enjoy every year.”

Tully added that it was a unanimous pick for the winner.

“It worked out pretty good,” he said. “We had a lot of fun doing it.”

The club also named a pair of runners-up. Both entries were also from Wisconsin:

“Some species of elephants have red toenails in order to hide in strawberry patches,” wrote Joshua Naker of Racine for second.

Thomas Balza of Appleton took third with, “I was eating in an outdoor café. It rained so hard it took me one hour to finish my soup.”
