The Burlington Area School District Buildings, Grounds and Transportation Committee approved a revised contract with Thomas Bus Company Monday night.

The committee approved the contract changes by a 2-1 vote. Board Member Phil Ketterhagen voted no.

After the meeting, Ketterhagen said he wanted to know the reasons for the cost increase.

“I do not know their costs,” Ketterhagen said.

BASD Business Manager Ruth Schenning said the increase in costs – a $20,000 boost in basic transportation costs from $1.37 million to $1.39 million, and a $1 addition to each kindergarten run from $79 to $80 – will cover inflationary costs for parts and personnel.

The base transportation costs of $1.39 million covers 21 double runs each day of the school year. The district incurs an extra $70 for any additional runs.

In addition, charters within the district are charged at $40 per hour with a minimum of one hour, while charters outside of the district are a $79 minimum charge with $15.50 per hour and $1.30 per mile.

Fuel costs are covered up to $1.50 per gallon, with the district picking up the extra from there.
