Naming rights tabled for now

The Burlington Area School District School Board Policy Committee tabled discussion Monday night on a proposed naming rights policy after a member of the committee had to leave early.

With Rosanne Hahn leaving due to illness, the policy committee was left with just two members – Jim Bousman and Roger Koldeway. The two stalemated during the last discussion of the naming rights policy.

Koldeway proposed tabling the discussion, saying that there would be no way to break the stalemate.

At the Feb. 2 Policy Committee meeting, each voted on the opposite side of the policy – which would allow stadiums, facilities, etc. to be named for a person under a variety of terms.

With the two disagreeing and no third person to break the vote, the policy went to the full board at the Feb. 9 meeting.

The School Board then sent it back to the Policy Committee on a motion from Bousman and a second from Phil Ketterhagen.

“In that first meeting, there were a lot of different alternatives mentioned that weren’t even discussed,” Ketterhagen explained. That’s why I think we need to cover all areas.”

The discussion on the proposed policy has been ongoing since an ad hoc committee put together draft policies for naming rights, sponsorships, advertising and social media.

While the social media is due for a second reading next month – and advertising and sponsorships have been approved – the naming rights policy has continued to have its issues.

Late last spring, a group comprised of football supporters, coaches and former players pushed to have the Burlington High School athletic field renamed “Don Dalton Stadium.”

While the motion passed, the School Board had to set aside Policy 940, which states that the general policy is not to name a facility after a person until they have been dead for 10 years. Voting yes were Board President Bill Campbell, Bousman, Todd Terry and Larry Anderson.

Hahn, Koldeway and Ketterhagen voted against the decision – in large part because of the problematic policy.

The ad hoc committee was formed to try and iron out new policies dealing with everything from naming rights to sponsorships.
