Man arrested after burglaries for drugs

A Hartford man who was staying at his sister’s in Burlington was arrested Aug. 26 after allegedly burglarizing one home and attempting to break into another.

Randall Lasater, 28, is charged with felonies in Racine County Circuit Court of burglary, attempted burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of possession of tools used in a burglary, one count of theft (special facts), possession of narcotic drugs, four counts of bail jumping and criminal trespass.

He is also facing a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Racine County Circuit Court, Racine County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home on Spring Drive in the City of Burlington for the report of a burglary Aug. 26. The owner said at least one firearm, a computer and between $20,000-$25,000 in jewelry was missing from the home.

An investigation found a screwdriver that didn’t belong to the owner, and ammunition for the missing handgun also gone.

Two days later, the sheriff’s department was dispatched to a home on Martin Terrace for an attempted burglary. A woman said she heard a noise as she came into the kitchen, and found a young man at her sliding glass door.

She told police that he took off eastbound and was thin, wearing plaid shorts and a baseball-style hat.

A citizen on a nearby street told one of the deputies that he’d seen someone matching the description run into the woods, and that she recognized the man as her neighbor’s brother. She directed deputies to a side-by-side duplex.

When deputies got there, they determined Lasater was in the home. While waiting for a K-9 unit, Lasater went out the back door and was taken into custody.

Lasater allegedly told deputies that he had heroin in his pocket as well as a needle. A deputy allegedly found a small brown leather coin purse with a syringe, several alcohol prep pads, an item commonly used as a tourniquet, and other items, as well as a metal tin with a small tan rock that Lasater said was heroin.

The sister said Lasater had come in earlier with two backpacks, both of which were turned over to the sheriff’s deputies. Deputies allegedly searched one of the bags and found more drugs. Lasater then reportedly became agitated and was taken to Racine County Jail.

After getting a search warrant, deputies returned and found a screwdriver and the missing laptop computer.

The deputy came back later to speak with Lasater, who allegedly admitted that he had broken into one home and attempted to break into another. He also allegedly admitted to taking a handgun, jewelry and the computer.

He allegedly told police he had traded the jewelry and gun to a man named “Cash” in Milwaukee for heroin.
