Man accused of stealing from two businesses

A Burlington man already out on bond after taking an unapproved bonus from the company he worked for is in more trouble – and now in Racine County Jail.

John Anderson, 43, was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Monday with misdemeanor theft and forgery after allegedly taking a check from his brother’s business and cashing it for $75.

Anderson remained in Racine County Jail as of Monday on a $5,200 bond. He was out on a $10,000 bond for embezzlement charges filed in November.

According to the criminal complaint, the wife of a local business owner came into the City of Burlington police department to report a check having been taken and cashed.

The woman allegedly told police she had previously written out a check to Anderson – whom she claimed had a “drug issue” – and was out sick the next day.

When she saw the cashed check, she allegedly told police she knew it was not her husband’s signature.

Anderson was confronted about the theft, and allegedly eventually admitted to cashing the check illegally. According to the police report, he apparently tried telling police it was a payoff to a man who had threatened him and his family before admitting it was a lie to give himself an alibi.

Anderson also allegedly told police he was not currently using drugs and had just undergone a drug test for work.

The embezzlement charges were over a March incident where Anderson and the payroll clerk at a Burlington business where they were both employed were involved with writing extra checks from the company checkbook – totaling about $32,000.

Anderson appeared in court Dec. 17 and signed a $10,000 signature bond on those charges.
