Jillian Leighton smiled Friday afternoon, even as the event she was waiting for at Walmart took a little while to get started.

Due to a traffic accident in downtown Burlington, the “cops” portion of “Shop With a Cop” were a little late to arrive – though everyone was fine.

But thanks to the generosity of the City of Burlington police department, about 45 families identified by Love Inc. got to go shopping for holiday gifts Friday afternoon.

Children went out into the store with a police escort to select gifts for siblings and parents.

Leighton said the event helped make the Christmas season a little brighter, especially with five children.

“I think it’s awesome,” she said. “We’d definitely struggle (without the help).”

She said her children wanted to pick out gifts for each other.

Her daughter, Katie, said she was definitely going to go shopping for her mom – as did her sister, Jenna Greer.

“I want to get her a scarf or a sweatshirt, too,” said Greer.

Jennifer Edgell felt the same way as Leighton, there with her three boys.

“It’s just really exciting, hearing them get really excited to pick presents for somebody,” Edgell said. “I’m just always short on money, so it’s nice that they get to pick some things.”

Walmart donates the money so the youngsters can purchase the gifts.

“It went fantastic,” “We really appreciate the opportunity that both Love and Walmart provide to us.”
