BASD School Board too close to call

Election Results2

The race for the Burlington Area School District School Board may be going to recount.

Adding in the Walworth County results, Kevin Bird appeared to have the most votes with 1,942, followed by Phil Ketterhagen with 1,851 votes and Barry Schmaling with 1,836. With two spots available, Ketterhagen appears to have a 15-vote margin of victory.

However, absentee ballots can be counted through Friday, and the Burlington Area School District will conduct its canvas of the votes Monday. BASD Superintendent Peter Smet said Wednesday that a recount would likely need to be requested by a candidate, and Schmaling said that he wasn’t sure he would ask for one. However, Schmaling also felt that an automatic recount may be triggered because of the close margin.

Jim Berndt was fourth with 649. A write-in candidate – presumably Roger Koldeway, who was a registered right in – picked up 596 votes.

Update, 10:35 p.m. – The circuit court race for Branch 6 in Racine County is tight. With a number of precincts still to report, David Paulson has a narrow lead over Tricia Hanson, 9,682 to 9,124.

Update, 10;20 p.m. – Results from Racine County show a very tight race for Burlington Area School District. According to totals (which still have City Ward 10 and Town Wards 8-11 out), Kevin Bird has 1,511 votes, Barry Schmaling 1,449, Phil Ketterhagen 1,364 and Jim Berndt with 480. Write-in votes are at 449 (likely for Roger Koldeway). Added with the Walworth County results, Ketterhagen and Bird would take the two seats as of now.

Update, 10 p.m. – Results from the Racine County website are not posting in the usual place. However, in the first unofficial results in the Burlington Area School District race, Phil Ketterhagen picked up 341 votes in the Town of Burlington 1-7 wards, while Kevin Bird had 323, Barry Schmaling 279, Jim Berndt and a write-in candidate – presumably Roger Koldeway – 156.

Update, 9:30 p.m. – The Walworth County website shows the following for Burlington Area School District: Phil Ketterhagen 339 votes, Kevin Bird 261, Barry Schmaling 222 and Jim Berndt 96. There are also 110 write-in votes, presumably for Roger Koldeway, who is now a registered write-in candidate after originally deciding not to run.

There are five total precincts in Walworth County for School Board, and all five have reported.

As of 9:25 p.m., no election results for the area had been posted on the Racine County Election website. We will keep you updated throughout the evening.
