City holds onto a full liquor license

Whether there will be any changes coming to the state’s laws governing how many liquor licenses a community is allowed to have remains to be seen.

But aside from a crack about the City Council knowing the State Assembly Speaker – Robin Vos, the son of council member Tom Vos – the city decided to hold back one of its two free Class B combination licenses Tuesday night.

The city approved a Class B combination license for El Burrito Loco – which had representatives at the meeting – and denied a license for Super Taco Moy, which did not.

Super Taco Moy got instead a Class B beer license, which allows the business to sell beer and wine.

The council kicked around whether either business deserved one of the two free combination licenses. The city has not had a regular license – or even its reserve license – available for more than three years. By filling both requests, officials would not have had one available if another attractive business came to the city looking.

On the same hand, Alderman Jon Schultz said he saw reason to award one to El Burrito Loco simply because business representative showed up at the meeting to plead their case.

Schultz also said he’d be open to the possibility of giving one to Super Taco Moy if representatives came to a meeting.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, the Department of Public Works and Bike Burlington will be working together to improve Wehmhoff Jucker Park.

The first task will be putting a roof on the new pavilion.

Bike Burlington will host a having a buy-sale-trade event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as bike safety seminars, trail information and maps.

A ribbon cutting for the new pavilion and bike trail will be at 3 p.m., with cake and a group ride is planned. The event marks the linking of the White River State Trail and the Seven Waters Trail.

Director of Public Works Craig Workman also announced the city’s second public works rodeo will be Friday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event gives DPW employees a chance to show off their skills for the public, including an obstacle course with the lawn mowers and backloader basketball.
