With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, the annual Spooky City activities in Burlington seem just a little more special.

“That always helps,” said event organizer Shad Branen. “Makes it a little more magical.”

The annual event starts Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. with what is being called “Minion Mayhem” family events, as well as treats in the lobby of Fox River State Bank.

Other activities will take place throughout the downtown area.

“It creates a rewarding activity for families, but it also promotes the businesses downtown,” Branen said.

New this year is the performance “Murder by Poe,” by the University of Wisconsin–Parkside theater department. The show, which is free and begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theater, covers a number of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous works.

This year, the Ghostbusters Experience troupe is unavailable because of Spooky City falling on Halloween. Instead, the free movie, “Hotel Transylvania 2,” will be shown at the Plaza Theater starting at noon.

“It’s been a very popular movie, and it’s newly released,” Branen said.

Tickets will be available beginning at 10 a.m. at McDonald’s, with a maximum of four per person. Seating for that and the Poe event are limited.

The schedule for the day:

  • 9:30 a.m. – Kickoff activities at Fox River State Bank.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Costume parade in Wehmhoff Square Park.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Free downtown hay rides, beginning and ending at McDonald’s.
  • 10:30 a.m. to noon – “Kids Are People, Too!” music in Chestnut Street loop.
  • 11 a.m. to noon – safe trick or treating at downtown businesses.
  • Noon – “Hotel Transylvania 2” free showing at Plaza Theater, tickets available at McDonald’s starting at 10 a.m. (limit four per person).
  • 12:30 p.m. – Free “Murder by Poe” live reading at Plaza Theater.
