A year away, mayor’s race is taking shape

There may not be much competition for City of Burlington Common Council seats this spring, but another race – one set for 2016 – appears to be heating up.

Former Mayor Jeannie Hefty confirmed Tuesday that she intended to run for mayor next spring, though for now, she didn’t want to comment further.

“I do not think it is fair or right for the candidates that are running in our city,” she said of the coming election in April.

When asked, she did clarify why she had decided to run again, saying she had an “outpouring” of support from a cross section of people.

“At first, I listened and considered it an honor of even being thought of,” she said. “Then it started really coming in more and more, and, in my heart, I felt I needed to step forward.”

Hefty wasn’t the only one confirming her commitment to next spring’s election. Current Mayor Bob Miller dispelled any rumors of him choosing not to run with a public Facebook post Monday.

“I heard today that someone has stated I am not going to run for Mayor in 2016,” Miller wrote. “Well, as they say rumors are not always true. I do plan on running for Mayor in 2016!!! The City has several major projects that I want to see finished.”

Miller also addressed further comments about ongoing issues with the Burlington Area Rescue Squad.

“I have also have heard that the city is attempting to either run or take over the Burlington Rescue Squad,” he wrote. “Again a rumor, the city does not now, nor did the city ever have plans to take over the Rescue Squad. We have been working with the Rescue Squad to try and get qualified medical people to a rescue call as quickly as is possible, as well as working together to share people and equipment when needed.

“This will only increase the level of service to our citizens which has been the goal of the City all along. The Burlington Rescue Squad has a long and stellar history of service to the city, and the city has no desire to change our affiliation with them,” he added.

Hefty is one of a new group of members of the Rescue Squad who are listed as drivers only.

  1. Miller: “The City has several major projects that I want to see finished.”

Yeah like lining their own wallets, gotta finish that project.

    What a bumbling buffoon.

  2. A New Perspective For Burlington

It’s time for the old guard to step aside and let someone who cares about the community verses a title sit in the Mayor’s chair once again. Burlington needs strong leadership that will stand behind it’s businesses, its people. Too many city ordinances that choke the life out of small business in town. Do you think the current mayor has done a walk-through of local businesses lately? Ever? We need an innovative thinker that will give this city the shot in the arm it needs to attract quality jobs, quality businesses and not just another bank, bar, or beauty salon. A couple years back during the building of the parking structure and revamp of several streets… several small/local businesses suffered tremendously during those months… do you think members of the Chamber of Commerce or the Mayor himself went down to check to see how those businesses were holding up? I’ll tell you 100% the answer is NO. Burlington needs a New Perspective, New Leadership and Miller is NOT the person you want re-elected. The choice is extremely clear in 2016… Hefty’16

  3. Bob Miller is a dullard and needs to go!

  4. Burlington’s best years were when Jeannie was Mayor.

  5. Hefty knows this community and takes pride in the businesses, service organizations and school. I think she is a great mix of familar yet new that we need.

  6. Gee, didn’t she live in east troy while claiming to live in Burlington while mayor?
