Town, city budgets draw few comments

No muss, no fuss – at least when it comes to the Town of Burlington 2015 budget.

With the town’s mill rate holding steady at $2.56 per $1,000 of property value for the ninth straight year, the annual budget public hearing drew no commentary Tuesday night and passed by unanimous vote.

“Many changes have been made in the budget, but we still have that mill rate of $2.56,” said Town Chairman Ralph Rice at the meeting.

Among the changes over the last nine years include switching to the Racine County Sheriff’s Department for police services, and an increase in road salt costs – especially this year following last year’s brutal winter.

The 2015 highway budget of $774,118 was also approved unanimously at the meeting.

City of Burlington

The city held its public hearing on the budget last week – with no comments made by anyone in attendance.

The tax levy for the city is up about .26 of a percentage point, said City Treasurer Steve DeQuaker, but because of net new construction being down, the city’s mill rate is going up by about 16 cents.

The mill rate this year will be $8.81 per $1,000 of property value. Last year’s rate was $8.65.

On a home valued at $150,000, the increase would mean an additional tax of about $24.

The city portion of the tax bill is about 34 to 35 percent of the average homeowners’ bill.

“We are looking at ways of reducing expenses where we can,” DeQuaker said. “(Also) trying to keep the services levels the way they are.”

The city budget will be up for approval at the Tuesday, Dec. 2 Common Council meeting.
