Meals on Wheels needs drivers

Tina Kirk, the nutrition director for Lincoln Lutheran and Racine County’s Meals on Wheels program, is in a pickle.

People in the Burlington area need their meals delivers – and she needs drivers to do the deliveries.

Kirk sent out an appeal in early January, right before the subzero temperatures rolled in and cancelled deliveries for two days.

The cold weather highlighted the need for delivery drivers, however.

“It’s really frustrating,” Kirk said. “Us three in the office can (take care of it) out (in Racine). But out in the Burlington area, I have one person who is a casual person I can call.”

If that person can’t fill in as a delivery driver, she needs to call people on the route and say, “I’m sorry, you’re not going to get a meal today.”

Kirk is down six drivers in the Burlington area. Four are gone for the winter, and two have left the program permanently.

“The volunteers that we’ve had for years are getting elderly, and just cannot do it anymore,” she said. She added that younger people are often working during the delivery period, which is late in the morning.

The only requirement to become a delivery driver is a car, insurance, and as Kirk put it, “a smile.” A delivery route normally takes one hour.
