Local CBD oil advocate keeps pushing forward

The future use of cannabidiol (CBD oil) in Wisconsin – and nationwide – took a step forward Monday.

Pennsylvania Congressman Scott Perry introduced a new bill called “Charlotte’s Web Medical Hemp Act of 2014” Monday morning, which would exclude CBD oil and therapeutic hemp from the definition of marijuana to make it more available to those who want it for treatment.

Local proponent Sally Schaeffer – who fought alongside other Wisconsin families to get a bill passed approving use of the oil in April – was pleased with the progress.

“I’m very excited that this is something they’re trying to vie for,” Schaeffer said. Her daughter, Lydia, died unexpectedly on May 11, without getting a chance to try the CBD oil as a treatment for her seizures.

“People have asked me why I’m still involved,” Schaeffer said. “Just because I have lost my little girl doesn’t mean I give up. I continue to educate and advocate in her honor for all those that need this medication.”

Schaeffer said those pushing for the bill are hoping to get Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to co-sponsor the bill. As of Monday, she had not heard back from Ryan, though she had spoken with him and other incumbents over the weekend at the Racine County Fair.

It is Schaeffer’s hope that this bill on the national level would make the oil more accessible, and she said that she intends to keep working toward that end in Wisconsin as well.
