Freezing rain makes driving treacherous

FLOODED STREETSA car plows through standing water on North Pine Street Friday evening  in Burlington. Drivers throughout the area battled freezing rain, icy and in some cases flooded roads as the sun set and temperatures hovered near the 32 degrees. Standing water developed in low areas as storm sewer catch basins remained clogged with snow. At least two spinouts were reported on Highway 11 just west of Lyons Road shortly after 5 p.m. and city fire and rescue crews were dispatched about 6:15 p.m. for a car crash at the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Browns Lake Drive. In Waterford, officials discussed closing Highway 83 near the Cotton Exchange after conditions spurred a multi-vehicle accident. The rain and road troubles put a cap on a week that began with temperatures well below zero. (Photo by Ed Nadolski)
