Utility will offer credit to customers to offset cost

The City of Burlington Department of Public Works asked all residents on city water lines to keep a cold tap running Monday.

Because of a deepening frost line due to the prolonged cold weather, the Department of Public Works has been fielding a number of calls due to frozen pipes this week. Their solution is that customers should keep an inside cold water faucet running all the time.

“The water stream should be as thin as possible to keep a constant flow of water (no dripping) and should be approximately the diameter of a pencil lead,” the release, from Director of Public Works Craig Workman, read. “Running the water faster is not necessary and will not provide additional benefits in preventing frozen lines.”

City Administrator Kevin Lahner said Tuesday water utility customers will receive a credit — based on the average use needed to keep pipes from freezing — to offset the cost on their water bills.

  1. And who is going to pay for this wasted water, the city? I doubt it. Then there is the sewer charge also.

    • City officials announced Tuesday that water customers will be given a credit on their bills based on the average extra water use attributed to running water to prevent pipes from freezing. The story has been updated to reflect this.

      • Local Business owner

Will the city also be crediting the sewer charges also? Water is cheap compared to the sewer charges!!!

    • I cannot help but laugh a little at your negative attitude since I read the reply from Mr. Nadolski. A. Most municipalities are asking residents to run a pencil sized stream of water from a faucet for 5 minutes, 3 times a day (The cost is extremely minimal). B. If you are a home owner, it may save you a costly repair bill! This is only on cold days, which will not last forever. Enjoy your credit & stay positive…it will warm up soon LOL!

  2. Global warming no doubt….the science is settled…lol!

    • Global warming will melt the north pole ice cap and the runoff will lower the water temperature of the gulfstream. The Gulfstream warms Europe and America. This will bring on the next ice age. I have seen our planet from 44,000 feet. It is much smaller than you think. It would not take much pollution to destroy our planet.

      • The only problem is that the polar ice cap is 50% bigger than it was 10 years ago. Recall that Algore said it would be melted by 2014…its actually 50% bigger!
