City looks at loosening temporary sign rules

After gaining approval from the City of Burlington Plan Commission last week, the Common Council voiced no objections Tuesday night to a proposed change to the city’s temporary signs ordinance.

The ordinance changes will be as follows:

• Inflatable advertising devices or signs will be allowed up to four times a year, per business, no more than seven consecutive days in a three-month period. Currently, they are allowed every six months.

• Murals that have been reviewed and approved by the Plan Commission and Zoning Administrator will be allowed. Currently, signs painted directly on walls are not allowed.

• The definition of temporary signs has been added.

• Time limits have been extended to allow display of temporary signs for 30 or fewer consecutive days, up to 10 times per year. Currently, they are only allowed for the same time frame three times a year.

• Temporary signs shall be dated with indelible marker indicating the first day of display.

Costs of issuing and enforcing the permits will be recouped by a one-time $140 annual permit, or a $35 per-use permit.
