The Burlington High School Academic Decathlon team is the latest of Burlington’s squads to be making a wider state impact.

The team, comprised of nine members, earned the right to compete in January’s regional competition at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by posting a top 25 score at the Nov. 10 local CESA 2 competition.

BHS was one of several schools from CESA 2 to qualify. In fact, the Southern Lakes Conference will have several squads at regionals.

Wilmot, which qualified to nationals as a team last year, posted the top score in the state by 2,999 points – 21,925. The score was well ahead of second-ranked New Richmond (18,926) and third-ranked Waukesha West (18,279).

Burlington’s overall score of 13,408 ranked the squad 23rd overall in the state of the more than 100 squads that participated in local competition.

Westosha Central and Union Grove also earned the right to compete at regionals.

The Burlington High School squad is comprised of Callum Leemkuil-Schuerman, Robert Vannuland, Dane Helnore, Chloe Hill, Zach Herbst, Emilio Pettis, Hunter Hough, Nathanial Sibley and Patrick Henning.

The 32nd season of the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon began on Nov. 10 with 104 teams and more than 1,000 students participating in local competitions statewide.

Teams are normally comprised of nine members, with three competing in one of three categories – honor students (3.75-4.0 grade-point average), scholastic (3.00-3.74 GPA) and varsity (0.0-2.99 GPA). The top two scores in each category are counted to determine the team score.
