For Catholic Central High School sophomore Sarah March, just getting into the State Scholastic Art Awards show at the Milwaukee Art Museum this year was a challenge.

After CCHS teacher Sue Sheldon convinced her to enter a stained-glass piece she created, a combination of delays – including cold-weather school cancellations – resulted in the paperwork for her entry being turned in the day it was due.

“We sent it the day it was due,” March said. “We weren’t sure whether it would get in or not.”

Not only was March’s entry accepted, it was honored. She was the only student to have a stained glass piece accepted into the show, and earned a Gold Key award in ceramics and glass at the show.

The Gold Key is the highest honor a student can win, and enters March into this year’s national contest.

“At first, I didn’t even know if it got in,” she said. “And I wasn’t sure about the other works.”

A sophomore, March has worked with stained glass before, but never to the extent she did with this piece – which had about 90 parts.

“At first, I found this pattern,” said March. “I’m pretty sure it wasn’t for stained glass.”

She then simplified the pattern to get it down to something she could work with.

“It was hard trying to get it to all fit together and work,” she said.

She will know in mid-March which pieces will go to New York for the next stage of the awards.

“It was really cool,” she said. “It kind of blew me away.”
