Taser, police dog bring reluctant compliance

A local man’s recent propensity to run afoul of local law enforcement officers added another chapter Aug. 29 – one that ended with the assistance of a Taser and a police dog.

Robert Christison, 46, of Slades Corners in the Town of Wheatland, was charged Aug. 30 with felony bail jumping and obstructing an officer after he allegedly abandoned his vehicle after it became stuck off of Plank Road in the Town of Dover.

Racine County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area shortly after 8 p.m. Aug. 29. Deputies found the vehicle empty and a witness told them the driver fled after learning police had been summoned. The witness said it appeared the driver was drunk because he was unsteady and slurring his words, according to the criminal complaint filed in the case.

Deputies then set up a perimeter and eventually spotted Christison in a wooded area near the accident scene. Officials allege Christison ignored commands to come out of the woods with his hands up and instead ran toward a cornfield adjacent to the wooded area.

Another deputy eventually spotted Christison and ordered him to stop running, the complaint alleges, but he turned and ran straight at the deputy, who used his Taser to knock Christison to the ground.

The complaint further alleges that while on the ground Christison continued to resist orders at which point the deputies threatened the use of a police dog to gain his compliance.

A deputy attempted to conduct a field sobriety test on Christenson, but he was allegedly unable to comply and stated that he was drunk and suicidal.

The felony bail jumping charge stems from court conditions placed on Christison after he was arrested in Kenosha County Aug. 12 and charged with felony battery to a law enforcement officer along with several traffic charges, including drunken driving, open intoxicants, failure to keep vehicle under control, operating left of center and operating without vehicle insurance.
