BHS grad dies in one-car crash

A 26-year-old Town of Burlington man affectionately known as “Goof” and “Goofy” died early Saturday morning in a one-car crash.

Matt Gardner, a graduate of Burlington High School, struck a utility pole in front of Browns Lake Golf Course at approximately 12:50 a.m. Saturday morning, according to a City of Burlington press release issued Saturday. The release did not give Gardner’s name; however, it was independently confirmed by three sources.

According to the press release, the Burlington Area Rescue Squad, Medix Ambulance, Paratech Ambulance and City of Burlington Fire responded to the crash. Gardner was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

A memorial at the site of the accident had sprung up by Saturday afternoon, with friends and relatives signing a wooden cross and leaving roses at the site of the accident. Similarly, Gardner’s Facebook page had tens of memorial messages and photos posted by the afternoon.
