BASD’s Smet to host coffee, luncheon events

In an atmosphere full of rigorous debate and exchanges of opinion, the Burlington Area School District is continuing to offer a pair of special forums.

BASD Superintendent Peter Smet will again hold “Saturday Coffee With the Superintendent” on the first Saturday of each month, and also “Lunch with the Superintendent,” starting Sept. 11.

“It’s something I like to do so people have an opportunity,” Smet said. “People have an opportunity to express their concerns.

“We get to talk about school issues.”

While neither will serve as an opportunity for official business to be done – both the luncheons and coffee dates are specifically clarified as not falling under meetings as defined by state statutes – Smet expects BASD School Board members to be present, and like the chance citizens will have to debate hot-button topics.

“It’s an opportunity for people in the community,” he said.

Coffee dates are the first Saturday of the month from 9-11 a.m. Those dates are: Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 4, 2014, Feb. 1, 2014, March 1, 2014, April 5, 2014, May 3, 2014 and June 7, 2014.

The lunch dates are school specific on Wednesdays. Anyone attending will be responsible for paying for or bringing his or her own lunch. Those interested should meet at the designated school’s main office at 11:30 a.m.

The dates are:

• Sept. 11, Dyer Intermediate School
