DNR seeks more local deer samples from hunters

Agency wants more information on chronic waste disease in area

The Department of Natural Resources is asking hunters from Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties to submit additional Chronic Wasting Disease samples during the holiday hunt from Dec. 24 to Jan. 6, or the remainder of the bow season also ending Jan. 6.

Sampling efforts this fall have focused on Kenosha and Racine counties to enhance understanding of disease in the southeast portion of Wisconsin. “To date we’ve received 211 samples and we’d like to get an additional 200 more to meet our goals this year. We appreciate the excellent cooperation from hunters this season,” said Renee Asmann, DNR wildlife technician.

As part of the ongoing surveillance efforts, these additional samples will help determine the presence and prevalence of the disease in these counties and around the area of the recently reported CWD-positive in Racine County.

For hunters only wanting the antlers, they may be removed at the sampling station or lymph node samples can be taken. For individuals wanting head mounts, the deer can be registered then taken to a taxidermist to be caped out and antlers removed, followed by returning the frozen head to a sampling station for testing. Registration and sampling stations will remain open through the bow hunting season and the upcoming holiday hunt to receive samples. Testing locations can be found on the DNR website by entering key words “registration stations” in the search bar, or by contacting Asmann at 262- 424-1938.
