Honor student Casey Petricek, of Kansasville, died Saturday of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash that occurred when she lost control of her car on a turn in the 23000 block of Highway 142, according to authorities.

In addition to being an honor student at Westosha Central High School, Petricek, 16, participated in basketball, volleyball and bowling. According to her obituary, she was a talented musician who could play clarinet, trombone, and guitar. She also taught herself to play piano. Petricek was also an avid chess player and enjoyed challenging her father.

According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, Petricek was driving east on Highway 142 in a 1999 Volkswagen Passat when she failed to negotiate a curve about 3:10 p.m.

The vehicle drove onto the shoulder of the road and then swerved back into the oncoming lane of traffic, according to officials. The car Petricek was driving was struck on the passenger side by a 2000 Chevrolet Astro Van driven by Katey Zimmermann, 17, of Trevor. Lisa Zimmerman, 15, was in the passenger seat.

Kansasville and Salem fire and rescue responded to the crash, along with sheriff deputies. Officials believe speed played a factor in the crash.

Petricek was critically injured and was taken by Flight for Life to Froedtert Medical Center. She died the following day.

Lisa Zimmerman had to be extricated and, along with Katey Zimmermann, was transported to Aurora Hospital in Kenosha for non-life threatening injuries and later released.

Petricek had hoped to become a surgeon, according to her obituary. She was close to completing her CNA clinicals and planned to work with Doctors Without Borders. Following her wishes, her organs were donated.

Petricek is survived by her mother and stepfather, Jennifer and Jeff Jansen; father and stepmother Rhys and Mary Petricek; sisters Ariel and Jessica Petricek; grandparents Robert and Carol Krenzke, Robert and Loisjean Petricek.
