HARRISON W. NICHOLS


Harrison ‘Nick’ Wood Nichols, Lt Col. USAF, Retired, 83, Burlington, formerly Union Grove, died Nov. 18, 2011, at Lakeland Health Care Center, Elkhorn. He was born Dec. 8, 1927, to the late Morton and Avada (Wood) Nichols in Owen. He spent his early life in Oshkosh and graduated from University of Wisconsin Law School.

On Dec. 27, 1952, he married Mary Kathryn Moore in Madison. Following marriage they resided in Union Grove, where he set up his law practice. He was deeply involved in the community. He also served over 35 years as Union Grove Village Attorney.

He was a veteran serving in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a 52 year member of Bixby-Hansen Post 171 of the American Legion.

He was a 50 year member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Burlington. He served on the vestry in numerous capacities. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge F & AM #288 in Union Grove for 48 years. He was involved in the Union Grove Lions Club serving as the president in 1964 and again in 1983. He served as treasurer of Graham Public Library in Union Grove from 1960 to 1991and the first president of the Lakeshore Library System. He was a lifetime member and former president of the Union Grove Chamber of Commerce and a charter member of the Racine County Foundation.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years; children, John H. (Mary Bottari) Nichols of Madison, Kathryn M. (Lynn Ruedinger) Nichols of Oshkosh and Carolyn R. (Emery) Nichols-Featherstone of Walworth; his grandchildren, Anna Kathryn Featherstone of Walworth and Whitman G. Bottari of Madison.

Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 2 p.m. until time of services at 4 p.m., at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 216 E. Chandler Blvd, Burlington. The Rev. Joanne Skidmore will officiate. A private burial at Wyoming Valley Cemetery in Spring Green, will take place at a later date. Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to St. John the Divine Episcopal Church or to the Wisconsin Lions Foundation.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Golden Years Nursing Home in Walworth and Lakeland Health Care Center for their care and compassion.
