The unbeaten Catholic Central High School football team hosts Brookfield Academy (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night to open Midwest Classic Conference action.

Toppers coach Tom Aldrich said Brookfield has a good quarterback and will provide a stiff challenge.

The Toppers should be up for the challenge based on their performance in their first two games this season.

At the conclusion of last week’s game, the Shoreland Lutheran football coaches mentioned a laundry list of tackling, turnovers, scoring – all things the Pacers didn’t do in a 20-0 shutout loss to visiting Catholic Central.

That’s how good the Toppers were on the defensive side of the ball.

Two friendly rivals from the former Metro Classic Conference, the Toppers kept the Pacers on the nonconference schedule after moving to the Midwest Classic with the smaller schools from the old Metro Classic.

Shoreland couldn’t get anything going all night.

They had a punt blocked and two turnovers, one of which led to a Toppers score.

Catholic Central scored on short runs from three different players in the first, second and third quarters.

Wyatt Riehle gave the Toppers a 7-0 lead with a 6-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes left in the first, and Tai Loughrin added a 1-yard score late in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Max Robson finished the scoring with a nine-yard scoring scamper.

The Pacers (0-2) were only able to muster nine first downs.

Shoreland head coach Paul Heubner said Catholic Central coach Aldrich, now in his 30th season, gets the most out of his kids.

“It’s a fun rivalry we’ve had a long time,” Heubner said. “We really appreciate the opportunity to play them. Tom always does a great job of getting his guys ready to go.

Aldrich said the Toppers battled Friday night, and Shoreland played a physical game.

“Nothing came easy. They stopped us at the 1-yard line and forced a turnover on downs. It was a well-played game by both teams.”

Aldrich said the Toppers opened things up in the passing game, compared to mostly running in week one.

“We’re 2-0 and we’re healthy, that’s important,” he added.
