The Burlington softball team carried high expectations coming into this season after a state tournament appearance last summer.

And after two losses to start the season, nobody was panicking but it was still uncharacteristic for this talented Demons squad to lose back-to-back games, even if it was at the beginning of the season.

With a plethora of returning talent, these girls are determined to contend for the Southern Lakes Conference championship once again.

Last week, they righted the ship with their first two victories in commanding fashion.

No team can really be expected to win the rest of their games and go 23-2, but the 2-2 Burlington Demons are definitely happy to get back in the win column.

Sure, it’s still April, and the Wisconsin spring weather has been nasty as ever, but Burlington head coach Val Auseth says these first wins are big.

“These absolutely are two big wins for us – every win is a big win in high school,” Auseth said after Tuesday night’s 10-0 victory at Lake Geneva Badger. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do as a team to get things clicking the way we need to. Every year is different. This team is still working on developing their roles. We have some more depth this year than last, so everyone is adjusting to their roles and responsibilities on the team.

“And as coaches, we’re still adjusting and learning this team as well. We have some tough games ahead these next few weeks, with the goal of peaking at just the right time this season.”
