Facing a state-ranked opponent on the road would be hard for any team.

Give that opponent an elite-level guard and home-court advantage in a rowdy, wild playoff atmosphere, and the road team wouldn’t really have a chance, right?

That’s the situation the third-seeded Burlington boys basketball team found itself in Saturday night, in a WIAA Division 2 regional championship game at No. 2 seed Milton, ranked No. 8 in the state in the latest Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association poll at 20-5.

It was the first time the young Demons, who feature four sophomore starters, would play in a hostile road playoff environment, too.

So it would be safe to assume they were blown out.

Not by a long shot.

Despite the stacked odds, the Demons only trailed by one point at halftime and the game was close throughout.

But Milton senior guard Jack Campion showed why he’s one of the best guards in the state with 30 points, and Burlington didn’t shoot well and couldn’t get over the hump in a 53-49 loss.

Burlington’s season, which showed plenty of promise thanks to a strong group of underclassmen, ended with a record of 17-9.

Milton improved to 21-5 and will play in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal at Wilmot against top-seeded Westosha Central.

“We knew Milton pretty well,” Burlington head coach Steve Berezowitz said. “We have played them three times in the last four years. They simply made shots when they needed to, and we picked a bad night to be cold. It was still a two-possession game but we just could not get the momentum to completely shift in our favor.”
