A 10th-place finish at the Southern Lakes Conference Meet Saturday earned Burlington High School senior Michelle Kleitsch first-team all-conference honors.

“Michelle had an awesome kick, passing eight runners in the last 300 meters,” noted head coach Rick Koceja. “She has worked extremely hard and deserves to be SLC all-conference.”

Kleitsch was clocked in 16 minutes 40.4 seconds over the 4,000-meter course at UW-Parkside.

As a team, both squads finished fourth overall, with Lake Geneva Badger winning the girls’ event, and Westosha Central the boys.

In the girls’ event, Badger tallied 47 points, with Burlington tallying 104. In the boys’ event, Westosha Central led with just 31 points. The Demon boys had 109.

For the Demon girls, five runners followed Kleitsch finishing from 21st to 29th place. Sophomore Aleigha Barry was 21st in 17:03.7, senior Annie Kocha 22nd in 17:04.5, senior Michelle Dankle 24th in 17:05.5, sernior Maddie Crawford 27th in 17:08.6 and sophomore Kit Kocha 29th in 17:09.6. Junior Caitlin Yonash was 34th in 17:35.1.

Senior Finn Finucane led the Demon boys with a 13th-place finish in 17:40.5. Senior Luke Falk was five places back in 18:02.6, and junior Zach Wawrzyniakowski 19th in 18:06.4.

Freshman Nathaniel Sibley and senior Quintin Berndt were 29th and 30th respectively, with times of 19:00.6 and 19:03.9

Senior Felix Loewe was clocked in 19:53.9 (38th) and sophomore Noah Strohm in 20:36.5 (43rd).

“Good pack running from both teams,” Koceja said. “The goal for sectionals is to have individuals achieve a season best.”

WIAA Division 1 sectional action will take place Saturday, Oct. 22, at UW-Parkside. The girls’ race begins at 10 a.m. and the boys at 10:45 a.m.

The top two teams from each sectional advance to state, plus the top five individual runners who are not members of qualifying teams.
