With an all-around solid team performance, the Burlington High School girls’ tennis squad earned its first Southern Lakes Conference dual win Thursday. The Demons defeated Westosha Central 6-1 to improve to 1-4 in the S
LC and 2-10 overall.
“Everybody played well,” head coach Rose Dolatowski said. “It was a nice night.”
Burlington swept all four singles matches, losing a total of only six games in the four wins.
Stephanie Londre improved to 18-0 overall with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Shelly Sturdevant scored a 6-1, 6-1 win at No.2, Carolyn Smith a 6-1, 6-0, victory at No. 3, and Sophie Grandi a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Grandi’s win improved her to 4-0 in the SLC.
Alli Zeman and Olivia Leuck pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 doubles. After losing the first set 6-7 (3), they took control winning the next two sets 6-0, 6-1.
Dolatowski felt that Zeman and Leuch must have been nervous to start out, but then put it together to pull away easily.
The No. 3 doubles team of Emily Stanich and Lydia Crabtree won 7-5, 7-5 in a closely fought match.
“Lydia is becoming much more aggressive at the net, and Emily served well,” Dolatowski noted.
The only Demon loss came at No. 2 doubles where Laura Christoph and Paige Puntillo lost 7-5, 6-3.
On Tuesday, Wilmot handed the Demons a 4-3 loss in another close SLC match.
“We moved some things around, so we’ll see how it goes,” Dolatowski said.
The moves Dolatowski made were at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Crabtree (who had been at No. 3 doubles) was paired with Kim Brown. The duo was unable to pull out a win, losing 4-6, 3-6.
Puntillo and Christoph, who had been playing at No. 2 doubles were moved to No. 3 and came up with their first SLC win, 7-5, 6-3.
Londre won easily, 6-0, 6-0, and Burlington’s other win came at No. 1 doubles, where Zeman and Leuck won 6-3, 6-4.
“They’re getting better and better each match,” Dolatowski noted.
