First Demon Triathlon set for Aug. 20

The Burlington Community Education Department will host its first Demon Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The course, featuring a 1/3-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride, and 3.1-mile run, will begin at Rockland Lake with the swim. Racers will then transition to the bike portion where they will head south and ride the scenic country roads and will finish with a run through downtown Burlington.

The registration fee is $80 in August and $90 on the day of the event. Team registration is $120 in August and $130 on the day of the event.

Demon Triathlon

Date: Saturday, August 20

Location: Burlington High School, 400 McCanna Parkway, Burlington

Start Time: 8 a.m.

Distance: 1/3-mile swim, 17-mile bike ride, and 3.1-mile run (additional info below)

Transition: Opens at 6:30 a.m.; closes at 7:30 a.m.

Categories: Individual; Relay; Clydesdale (over 250 pounds).

Award Categories: Overall male; overall female; Top three in age groups, Top three Clydesdales, Top three relay team mixed, Top three relay male team, Top three relay female team.

Finisher Medal: Each participant will receive a medal.

Meal: Included after the race.

Age Groups: 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89.

The swim will occur in Rockland Lake. Swimmers will be bused to Camp MacLean beach for a point-to-point swim. Swimmers will exit the lake behind the high school.

The bike route will lead south out of town on rolling country roads. The route will not be closed to traffic but police and volunteers will be at road crossings.

The run will wind to downtown Burlington where it will cross the Fox River.

Any excess funds generated by the event will go directly towards the Burlington Area School District’s School Forest. Funding will be used towards the upkeep of the trail systems, combating invasive species, and general maintenance of the forest.

Burlington’s School Forest provides many opportunities, including: outdoor education for all levels of students, home site for the Burlington High School Cross Country Invitational, and ski and running trails, and is available for the public’s use year-round.
