Demons win wrestling showdown at Waterford

Burlington’s Austin Skrundz, shown here in a match earlier this season, dropped a 5-2 decision to Waterford’s Hunter Rudzynski Thursday, but the Demons remained unbeaten in the Southern Lakes Conference with a 45-24 dual meet win over the Wolverines.

Demons in the driver’s seat for SLC title

The Burlington High School wrestling team completed a sweep of its closest challengers for the Southern Lakes Conference title Thursday with a 45-24 dual meet victory at Waterford.

The win gives Burlington a share of the SLC title, with a chance to become the outright winner with a victory in next month’s conference tournament.

Thursday’s win marked the second straight victorious showdown for the Demons and coach Jade Gribble.

Gribble was ecstatic after the Delavan win, because he talked all year long about the Comets, who won a share of the SLC title in 2021.

He believed they were the favorite to win it all.

“I feel great, and I’m happy with the energy we wrestled with tonight,” Gribble said Jan. 13 moments after the Delavan win.

“I am a little surprised, but the kids are starting to believe in one another and having fun. We started at a good weight for us, and for the most part that got us going right away.”
