BESSIE MATHEWS

      Bessie “Betty” Mathews, 98, formerly of Burlington, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, at Milestone Senior Living in Cross Plains.

Betty was born in the Township of Little Rice in Oneida County, on Jan. 7, 1923, to Anton and Elsbieta (nee Valin) Michalec of Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) descent. On June 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald Mathews in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on June 25, 1992.

Betty was a member of the Plymouth United Church of Christ. She worked at Starks Candy and during World War II, at Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee. Betty and Donald raised five children in the 1950’s and 1960’s. She was a chick sexer for Mathews Poultry Farm and other hatcheries in the area in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She loved flower gardening and was known for her fantastic gardens and her fall ornamental plant sales.

Betty is survived by her children, Deane (Joann) Mathews of Pittsville, Diane Mathews of Cross Plains, Keith Mathews of Wausau, Karen (Mark) Masbruch of Rochester, Minn. and Linda Mathews of Beloit; ten grandchildren; and nine, soon to be ten, great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers; a sister; and in-laws.
