High school decides to keep rule in place through end of year

Waterford Union High School officials have decided to keep an indoor mask mandate in place through the end of the school year. The last day of classes this year is June 10.

The decision, made at a School Board meeting Monday, came after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided its most recent guidance on COVID-19 precautions.

Superintendent Luke Francois and Dan Foster discussed the administrative-level reviews of precautions that have been, and continue to, take place since the coronavirus was first declared a pandemic nearly 15 months ago.

“We’ve navigated it to the best of our ability,” Francois said of evolving recommendations from the CDC and other federal, state and local agencies.

As has been widely reported, the CDC has issued new guidance stating the federal agency’s belief adults vaccinated from COVID-19 do not need to wear facemasks indoors, in most circumstances. The agency, however, has offered more tempered guidance for youth.

In the case of schools, the CDC is recommending mask mandates remain in place “for at least the remainder of the 2020-21 academic school year.” The statement, in part, is based on low vaccination levels for youth — many in age brackets still not eligible to receive it.

Foster in his most recent comments to the board on the subject acknowledged the desire to return to as much pre-pandemic normalcy as possible, but said he believed WUHS needed to continue striking a balance between keeping the school open, yet maintaining precautions.
