Burlington

An enduring connection

In addition to building a thriving internal medicine practice in Burlington, Dr. Katarzyna (Zaremba) Erickson was an avid gardener who was equally adept at nurturing plants. (Submitted photo)

Patients, colleagues mourn loss of a ‘rare person’

David Corbett recalls one of his first encounters with his new doctor – a Polish woman who was less than half his size – with a bit of awe and a heart full of admiration.

Corbett, who years ago was sent to Dr. Katarzyna Zaremba at Burlington Clinic to treat his dangerously high blood pressure, was perhaps a bit skeptical of the well-dressed pixie standing in front of him until…

“She grabbed me by the shirt and said ‘Look here big boy, you’re going to be taking some powerful medication.’”

The message was clear – Corbett’s life was on the line if he didn’t stick with the program his new physician prescribed. She needed him to understand the seriousness of the situation.

“From that day forward I did everything she told me to do,” Corbett said. “She probably saved my life or at least prevented a stroke.”

For those who knew Dr. Zaremba – Kasia to those who knew her well – it was her innate ability to connect with patients from all walks of life that made her a great doctor.

Now many of those former patients and colleagues are in mourning after learning that Kasia died Feb. 24 at the age of 60 from complications of breast cancer in the home she shared with her husband in the Town of Burlington.

“She so much loved being a doctor here,” her husband, Dr. Lief Erickson, a retired general surgeon, said.
