Rice had long history of community service

Former Town Chairman dies at 87

Longtime former Burlington Town Board chairman Ralph Rice died Friday at the age of 87.

Rice, a lifelong farmer, was known for his long record of community service, both as a volunteer and an elected official.

He served as Town Board Chairman until his term expired in April. He announced in January that he would not seek another term.

Rice contributed in multiple capacities, ranging from volunteer firefighter with the Town of Burlington when the department was at its infancy in the 1960s, to the Planning and Zoning Committee before before being elected a supervisory post and eventually becoming chairman.

Rice said in January he opted to step down because of age, as well as general health concerns, and hoped the best for the Town of Burlington.

“I have really enjoyed what I have been and we will see what happens,” Rice said. “I had the opportunity to do a lot of things and had an opportunity to work with a lot of nice people.”

According to his obituary, Rice’s volunteer work with the Racine County Fair Board and Executive Committee were dear to his heart.

A celebration of life has been scheduled for Sept. 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Racine County Fairgrounds in Union Grove.
