BHS teacher can return to classroom in fall

Investigation finds Taff did not violate law or board policies

A Burlington High School social studies teacher who was suspended in January following complaints regarding his classroom materials has been cleared to return to teaching at the school next fall.

Jeff Taff

Jeff Taff has been on paid leave since January pending the results of the investigation by an outside entity hired by the district. The matter became an issue of local controversy after students and parents reviewed materials Taff posted to an online assignment portal for students before leaving for Washington D.C. to attend a rally in support of former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6 – the same day the insurrection occurred at the U.S. Capitol.

Following the initial complaint regarding classroom materials further complaints were lodged alleging Taff discriminated against some students.

“The investigator concluded that the teacher did not violate Board policies, or state and federal laws as it pertains to any alleged discrimination,” district officials wrote in a news release issued Thursday afternoon. “Further, there is no evidence that the teacher engaged in any unlawful activity on January 6, 2021, while in Washington D.C. The teacher will return to teaching at Burlington High School in the fall.”
