Here’s the lowdown on Monday’s school district meeting

Here’s a brief explanation of Monday’s meeting of the electors in the Burlington Area School District.

What: The Burlington Area School District will host it’s second meeting of school district electors this year for the purpose of establishing a tax levy for the 2011-12 school year.

When/Where: Monday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the Burlington High School gym.

Procedure: District residents – or electors as they are called in this context – will have three choices: freeze the tax levy at last year’s level; accept the School Board-approved levy with a 3.69 percent increase; or reject those options and propose an alternative for approval at the meeting. The vote is advisory and the School Board will meet Nov. 1 to officially establish the levy.

What’s at stake: With the 2011-12 budget already set and contracts signed, if the School Board decides to freeze the levy, district officials will have to cut roughly $750,000 out of the current budget. If the levy increase is approved as proposed, taxpayers can expect to pay roughly $35 more per each $100,000 of property value.
