A day to remember

Local communities plan Memorial Day observances

Residents throughout the area will have a chance on Monday to pause and honor those who lost their lives in service to their country.

The area’s annual Memorial Day observances is led by Rochester, which has a history that goes back more than 150 years.

The ceremonies will include gun salutes, the laying of wreaths in cemeteries and at memorials and, in Rochester’s instance, a parade.

Here’s a look at the area’s Memorial Day events:

 

Rochester

Rochester’s 156th Consecutive Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday in the village’s downtown.

The laying of flowers will take place at approximately 10 a.m. in the Rochester Cemetery, 31440 Washington Avenue

Parade line up begins at 1 p.m. at the Rochester Fire Station, 31020 Academy Road. The parade will be followed by a memorial ceremony at Pioneer Park.

 

Burlington

Burlington’s veteran’s organizations will host their annual Memorial Day ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. in Veterans Park at Echo Lake, 595 Milwaukee Avenue.

The observance will include a gun salute, a prayer, a wreath release on Echo Lake and a wreath-laying at the Veterans Memorial.

 

Union Grove

American Legion Post 171, 1027 New Street, Union Grove, will hold the following events for the Memorial Day weekend:

  • Saturday, May 28, 9 a.m. Meet at Post 171. Proceed to seven local cemeteries to place American flags on veteran’s graves.
  • Sunday, May 29, 7:45 a.m. Meet at Post 171 (Honor Guard in uniform). Proceed to cemeteries for Memorial salutes as follows: 8:30 a.m., Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery; 8:50 a.m., Scotch Settlement Cemetery; 9:10 a.m., Dover Catholic Cemetery; 9:30 a.m., Yorkville Cemetery; 9:50 a.m., Pilgrim’s and Trinity Lutheran Cemeteries; 10:20 a.m., Sylvania Cemetery; 11 a.m., Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 21731 Spring St., Union Grove. Honor Guard will post colors at the Memorial Program hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Monday, May 30, 8 a.m. Meet at Post 171 (Honor Guard in uniform). Proceed to the American Legion Memorial Park. for 9:15 a.m. Memorial Day program, followed by a procession to Union Grove Memorial Cemetery, 5115 S. Colony Ave., for an honors ceremony. A Legion family potluck picnic is planned at Post 171 at 11 a.m.
  • Monday, May 30, vehicle parade at Union Grove Veterans Home.

Participants are invited to decorate their vehicles with signs thanking the veterans, and to wave flags out the windows.

All interested participants are asked to meet from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the Racine County Fairgrounds. Participants are asked to use the Highway 45 fairgrounds entrance.

The vehicles will leave the fairgrounds at approximately 2 p.m. and travel on Highway 11 and Highway C to the grounds of Southern Wisconsin Center and the Wisconsin Veterans Home.
