Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
While Burlington got off relatively lucky last week when heavy rains pounded the area, the Town of Burlington is still dealing with the problem that is Hoosier Creek Road.
Water from the Fox River backed onto the road, both north and south of the railroad tracks.
This is a problem for town officials, who are trying to finalize the plans to close the railroad crossing and create a cul-de-sac on both sides.
Town Chairman Ralph Rice was not pleased Tuesday, saying the flooding isn't coming from local waters, but further upstream.
"That flooding did not come from the local area," Rice said. "Hoosier Creek ... that didn't raise hardly at all.
"The flooding that came in came from upstream."
The issue is that in order for construction to begin, Rice says the town needs a stretch of dry weather so the water will recede enough for work to be done.
"During a normal year, in July and August, that would've been bone dry," Rice said.
With Wisconsin Central Railroad officials wanting the crossing closed by October, town officials are feeling the pressure.
"Unless we get some dry weather, we can't work," Rice said. "It's going to have to take some drying down before we can work in there."
Rice said that bids on the Hoosier Creek Road project are due at the Aug. 12 meeting.
Right now, Rice just wants the project started.
"I want it out of our hair," Rice said. "This shouldn't be that difficult of a project to do.
"There are other things that have to be done."
