Jennifer Eisenbart Sports Editor
At the time, I didn't think the question was all that important.
But as I sat back and looked over my notes from Tony Romo's press conference before the start of his football camp last month, I realized that a few teenagers had pegged something most of us probably have some curiosity about.
Just what IS on an NFL player's playlist, anyway?
For Romo, it was a little Lady Gaga, as well as some popular pieces - "Under Pressure" by Queen, "Vida la Vida" by Coldplay and the song "Thunderstruck." I suppose we all have songs that get us going, and I have to admit, I'm a little partial to "Under Pressure" myself.
After all, what do you call deadlines in the newspaper business?
But the question really served as a springboard to bigger and better thoughts. I got to looking at my playlists on my iPod, and took a look at just what I listen to. I also realized that I haven't had a workout playlist put together in a while.
So, just what works when it comes to sports? Or exercise, or fitness in general? There seems to be a general set of basics out there. At least a few schools every season - fall, winter and spring, as well as American Legion baseball - seem to have "Eye of the Tiger" permanently in place.
I'm partial to it myself, though the original "Rocky" theme works well, too. And if you like going with the Rocky theme, I recommend any of the instrumental tracks from the Rocky IV soundtrack. After all, how can you not be inspired to work when you hear Drago - the symbolism of cold-war antagonism - say "I must break you?"
But there are other, lesser-known choices. One of my best friends has the song "Defying Gravity" from Wicked on her list - along with the songs "Hey Ya" by Outkast and Eminem's "Lose Yourself." At Waterford, the song "Heart of a Champion" by Nelly has been on the boys basketball team's pregame list for ages.
I have a few favorites that have ended up on mine, some recognizable, others ... well, not so much. My music tastes have always been a little ... eclectic. Or as a coworker likes to tell me, "some of us actually have taste."
But, a few thoughts off of my playlist:
I hate to say it, but I'm partial to Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." The song isn't exactly inspiring - stop and listen to the lyrics sometime - but the tune is catch and it gets you moving. The exact same thing can be said for Springsteen's "Glory Days." Depressing, yet ... catchy.
If you really want to get moving, I suggest the song "Canned Heat" from Center Stage. Actually, a number of songs from that soundtrack are on my exercise playlist, including "Higher Ground" by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
And, while the lyrics may not all fit, I'm a sucker for Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." Aside from the fact that Glee has repopularized the song, it just makes you want to move.
So, what's on your playlist? If you feel up to it, let me know. Who knows, maybe we all could use to find some new music.
